Victim Witness Coordinator

Job Responsibilities:
This position is responsible for the organization, implementation, and administration of the Victim/Witness Assistance Program, providing the needs and protecting the rights of victims and witnesses per Chapter 950 of the Wisconsin State Statues.

Victim Witness staff.



1. Orient victims and witnesses regarding rights, procedures, and available resources per Wisconsin State Statues.

a. Maintain contact with victims and witnesses to keep them informed regarding case status.
b. Assist them in preparing for court in an age appropriate manner treating them with dignity and respect.  
c. Coordinate witnesses for trial providing a safe area from defense witnesses or intimidation.  
d. Serve as court escort for victims and witnesses as necessary.
e. Review criminal files to determine victim information and possible need to gather restitution information, verifying and collecting required information for submission in the District Attorney file.  

f. Assist victims with the return of property.

2. Identify potential problems related to court appearances alerting required parties attempting to resolve issues.

3. Prepare and submit reimbursement reports and annual report to Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) which determines the reimbursement amount for the Victim Witness Program 

4. Prepare and submit the Victim/Witness annual budget; attend required meetings.

5. Provide Department of Corrections or proper agency with necessary information for the collection and distribution of court ordered restitution.

6. Interview, hire, supervise, train, evaluate and discipline Victim Witness staff.

7. Advise staff regarding interpretation and application of policies, procedures, and standards to specific situations for compliance of victim witness rights.

8. Respond to all inquiries from victims, witnesses and all related agencies in a timely and courteous manner.

9. Assist attorneys during court proceedings as required.

10. Responsible to know and practice the Safety policies of the County.  Perform all job tasks in a safe and prescribed manner.


1. Intercede with employers when requested by witnesses.

2. Contact police agencies regarding witness protection issues.

3. Provide presentations to community groups on rights and services related to crime victims.

4. Maintain relationships with community partners to form a base of resources for victim referral.

5. Analyze state policies and statutes; establish department policies and guidelines to protect the rights of victims.  Develop and maintain all brochures utilized by the Program.

6. Any other duties as may be assigned.
Job Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Criminal Justice or related field is required.  Two to three year’s experience, or a combination of experience, in related fields of criminal justice, social work, counseling, sociology or psychology.  Possession of, or must obtain the Victim Services Professional Provisional Credential within three (3) months of employment, working towards the Basic or Advanced Credential, to be obtained within two (2) years and maintained while employed with the County, unless otherwise agreed upon.  Possession of a valid driver’s license, as well as a licensed and insured auto-mobile are required as a condition of employment, or transportation immediately available to candidate.  Basic everyday living skills, the ability to understand and follow directions (District Attorney Office procedures and protocol, statutory requirements, etc.), and reading and writing (assist victims with complaints and other legal documents) is necessary.  Ability to communicate orally and in writing with individuals and groups.  Ability to maintain confidentiality.
