GENERAL FUNCTION

Responsible for the care and custody of jail inmates, provides necessary health and welfare needs as required, attends to the health, medical, and emotional needs of the inmates and maintains security and order in the jail.  Assist with and complete transports as assigned.

RESPONSIBILITIES

A. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Assist with inmates.
a) Book in:  Complete required paperwork and ensure arresting agencies fill out appropriate forms and enter collected information into the Jail Record Management system; secure all property according to procedure and policy; obtain “hold” authorizations; advise and give inmate rules of the jail; check in secure all medications; search inmates; mug photos, finger print and record data on inmates; issue bedding and clothing; label and store street clothing; assign cell block and cell to inmates; run CIB – DOT – NCIC checks; take probable cause documents; indicate inmate’s location on master board; place all information in correct locations; answer phones, set appointments, send teletypes as needed, or other duties as needed at the book in area.
b) Complete any screening processes required:  Take action on information obtained when needed.
c) Huber area:  Provide Huber inmates with Huber rules, application form and other needed items for Huber release; verify and approve employment of inmates; collect time sheets; file and maintain Huber information; log inmates in and out and verify their location; check for rule violations, drinking etc.; make written reports as required; collect Huber monies; notify cooks on meal counts and assist in distributing sack lunches; keep Huber area clean at all times; make random telephone checks on Huber inmates to verify their location.
d) Visitation:  Schedule appointments; escort inmates to and from visiting areas; sign in visitors as required; search inmates after visits; review visiting schedule for the day; handle any problems with visitations or refer to supervisor; inspect visitation rooms; approve inmate visitation request when needed.
e) Control room:  Assist in control room operation when assigned.
f) Meals:  Serve meals; count utensils that go into and out of cells; collect dishes, etc. and return to washing area; be certain that all inmates are fed; supervise inmates washing dishes, etc.; provide meal counts to the cooks; hand out Huber sack lunches; order sack lunches needed for Huber inmates; keep any records required.
g) Medications:  Document in all medications; give medications as directed by the medical staff/doctor; document all medications given or refused; store all medications as per procedure; order medications when needed; perform CPR and first aid as needed; give non-prescription medications as outlined in procedures; notify supervisor of any problem with medications; take medical request and handle according to procedures; take emergency steps on medical request that need it; monitor all health complaints and take needed action; observe inmates to recognize symptoms of alcohol/drug abuse, withdrawals, mental and emotional disorders, and other medical problems.
h) Linen Exchange:  Change bedding and towels according to procedure, and more often if needed.  Change clothing consistent with procedure, count all items in the exchange and check the condition of items during exchange and report damage and shortages.  Remove unusable items, report unusable items and place them in a designated area. Report low supplies and problems to supervisor.
i) Inmate Requests:  Handle any of the following requests:  medical, commissary, visitation, indigent vs. non-indigent, religious, personal hygiene, lawyer, or others as needed.  Obtain writing paper for inmates.
j) Jail Inspections:  Inspect and document inspections of cell blocks, inmates, inmates of special watches, medical watches and suicide watches and other areas more often if circumstances dictate.  Identify and correct unsafe conditions, prepare written reports, inspect for unsanitary conditions and correct them, refer items unable to correct to supervisor.  Check area where maintenance workers have been, check for any security issues and correct or refer for correction.
k) Supervise inmate workers:  washing clothes, cleaning, washing dishes, garbage removal, performing other duties assigned.
l) Jail Violations:  Document violations of rules, take immediate action to maintain control and security, recommend disciplinary actions, assist in disciplinary actions as needed, prepare written reports as required, testify as required in hearings, notify supervisor of any violation that threats security.
m) Escort inmates.  Assist with court appearances and effect transports as assigned.  Assist with and complete transports as assigned.
n) Frisk/Search Inmates:  Frisk / Search inmates as required for facility security and search cells as required.
o) Release of Inmates:  Release inmates as required; prepare needed paperwork for release; check CIB – NCIC before release; combine paperwork and place in proper locations; update computer, re-check on mugs and prints; obtain signatures from inmates where needed; release property to inmates; make sure inmate’s cell is cleaned out of personal items; inspect the cell of the inmate for damage, etc.; lock all empty cells.

2. Responsible to know and follow the Policies and Procedures of Wood County.  

3. Responsible to know and practice the Safety policies of the County.  Perform all job tasks in a safe and prescribed manner.

B. OTHER DUTIES
1. Communicate with inmates.  Require inmates to maintain acceptable levels of personal hygiene.  Provide hygiene information to inmates if requested.  Instruct inmates in housekeeping and sanitation procedures.
2. Conduct inmate counts.  Maintain order, control and security at all times.  Report damage to supervisor or duty officer.
3. Know and follow emergency procedures.  Respond to alarms within the jail and take proper action, including evacuations, and extinguish small fires.
4. Operate the computer systems, as needed.  Answer phones.  Operate all jail equipment and cell doors.
5. Inspect mail.  Take bonds.  Handle inmate money and document transactions.
6. Check for low supplies and notify supervisor.  Inspect supplies, put away supplies as needed, and inventory items as needed.
7. Assist judge with probable cause hearings.
8. Review reports and notes from other shifts.  Brief other shifts.  Review policy/procedural manuals, bulletins or directives.  Bring job-related problems to the supervisor.
9. Conduct tours as needed.  Assist volunteers.
10. Clean areas of the jail that need it.  Perform general housekeeping duties when needed.
11. Take legible fingerprints and collect data as needed.  Forward this information as needed.
12. Investigate all alarms in the facility.
13. Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications:
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, QUALIFICATIONS
Education:  A High school diploma or its equivalent. Criminal Justice/Corrections degree preferred or be presently Certified or Certifiable as a Corrections Officer in the State of Wisconsin. You must have or be able to successfully complete the Wisconsin Basic Jail Certification Academy.  

Qualifications:  18 years of age or older, United States citizen, be of good reputation, no felony convictions, good health, pass pre-appointment investigation as well as pre-employment physical examination, Psychological examination and drug screening.  Basic, everyday living skills are needed, as is the ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.  Reading, writing, adding, and subtracting is needed.  The ability to speak clearly and precisely.  A general understanding of computers is required.  Must be able to assume responsibility and function calmly in emergency situations.  Ability to interact with others is required.  Possession of a valid Wisconsin Driver’s license is necessary, and able to operate a motor vehicle. 

Basic equipment used:  Computer, calculator, copy machine, scanner, FAX machine, radio equipment, fire equipment, and monitoring/recording devices, cameras, video equipment, brooms, fingerprinting equipment, fire equipment, general medical equipment, breathing apparatus, eye protection, portable breath tester (PBT) and other law enforcement and corrections related equipment.
