Equipment Operator - Screed

FT/PT:Full-time 40 hrs/week - WRS Eligible

Job Responsibilities:
The Equipment Operator primary duties are to operate asphalt paving equipment and various pieces of Department equipment as assigned by supervisory personnel.

No supervisory responsibility.


1. Primarily operate screed on bituminous paver and to apply asphalt per plan and quality specification as instructed by lead worker, superintendents or engineer.  Also must perform additional tasks of other positions as needed and instructed by lead worker.
2. Screed operation on the asphalt paver involves making normal adjustments for obtaining proper depth, grade and finished cross section of asphalt material via screed controls.
3. Ability to operate or initiative to learn to operate other equipment required on an asphalt crew.
4. Bolt extensions to screed to adjust width, using wrenches.
5. Maintain paving equipment and tools to include but not limited to cleaning, greasing, changing fluids, checking and adjusting the screed.
6. Ability to guide and direct dump trucks while backing up to machine hopper when operating paver.
7. Heat screed and run paver electronics.
8. Calculate asphalt yields and report to supervisor.
9. Use shovel, rake, and compaction tools/equipment as necessary when constructing asphalt material.
10. Responsible to know and practice the Safety policies of the County. Perform all job tasks in a safe and prescribed manner.
11. This position may be required to report to various job locations in the County as directed by a supervisor.
12. Thorough understanding of all aspects of the paving industry including preparatory work, grades, drainage, paving patterns, compaction and other details related to asphalt paving.

1. During winter months, plow snow as required. May be assigned to plow snow on a relief patrol winter section, as available.
2. Any other duties as assigned.
3. Must be willing to travel and work anywhere in Wood County.
4. Be willing to work overtime, nights and weekends when necessary.
5. Ability to work in a team setting.

Job Qualifications:
High school diploma or the equivalent is required.  Must be 18 years of age.  Possession of, and maintained while employed with Wood County Highway Department, a valid Wisconsin Commercial Drivers License (CDL), Class A, with the “N” endorsement required, or ability to acquire within 30 days.  Possession of a safe driving record and the ability to maintain one while employed by Wood County.  1-2 years’ experience in screed operations and in highway operations is preferred; thorough knowledge of, or a demonstrated ability to learn all aspects of paving (including ability to operate paver electronics) and bituminous mixes within six (6) months. Demonstrated ability to drive trucks, preferred.  Must possess basic, everyday living skills, the ability to understand and follow directions (work assignments) and the ability to read and write, add and subtract.

Basic equipment used:  Screed, dozer, paver, and roller.  Basic hand tools (hammer, chainsaw, shovel, broom, wrench, screwdriver, etc.); power tools:  saws, sanders, chain saws, shovels and brooms); highway equipment (air hammer, mower, snowplow, loader, etc.), and first aid equipment.  Personal protective equipment used:  breathing apparatus and dust mask, safety boots, hearing and eye protection and safety vest, hard hat.  Office equipment:  calculator.  Technical equipment:  measuring devices.
