Job Responsibilities:
Purpose of Position
This position serves as Medical/Treatment Director for Wood County Human Services Behavioral Health Division. Provides psychiatric care and treatment to clients in a variety of community based programs including the Mental Health and Substance Abuse Outpatient Clinic, Comprehensive Community Services, and Day Treatment programs.  Provides clinical oversight, direction and supervision of treatment team.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this position.  These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

Performs psychiatric assessments, formulates diagnoses and treatment plans, and selects and initiates treatment modalities for a wide range of mental illnesses and substance abuse issues.

Prescribes medications, provides education to clients and families, and monitors client’s response to medications and documents all of these activities in the electronic health record.

Performs clinical screens if needed, orders and monitors selected laboratory or routine diagnostic tests and educates patient and families to the findings.

Provides consultation to other professional staff in the clinic, clients and their families, other community agencies and/or health care providers.

Reviews medication information and medication consent forms with clients/guardians to ensure an understanding of the risk benefit of medications and client rights.

Collaborates and provides consultation to the Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner.

Prepares and maintains psychiatric records and reports and completes all required clinical and billing documentation in a timely manner.

Provides ongoing psychiatric care to clients and makes appropriate dispositional recommendations.

Determines or makes recommendations for discharge disposition of clients and reviews the closing of clients from the outpatient clinic.

Reviews mental health and AODA intake evaluations and treatment plans completed by clinical staff.  

Provides expert testimony in court cases, when required.

Assists in the development, evaluation and implementation of clinical programs.

Assumes overall responsibility for the care rendered to clients under his/her care.  

Additional tasks and responsibilities

Participates in agency meetings, works in collaboration with the Behavioral Health Division Administrator to develop a cohesive treatment team.  

Maintains the confidential nature of client and business information.

Participates in the Medical College of Wisconsin Central Wisconsin Psychiatry Residency Program; oversees the Psychiatric Residents while they are on site.  

Other duties as assigned or required.

Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

Possession of unrestricted license or ability to obtain an unrestricted license to practice medicine in the state of Wisconsin with a psychiatric specialty.

Must keep license current through continuing education as required and maintain a professional standing.

Licensed with Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, techniques, literature and new developments in the field of psychiatry. 

Knowledge of electronic medical records or ability to learn those skills.

Knowledge of the standards of care and treatment in the field of mental health and substance abuse treatment.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, staff and the public; ability to work with a multi-disciplinary team, courts and a variety of referral sources.

Ability to supervise and direct multi-disciplinary professional staff in the implementation of client care and treatment.

Knowledge of the law as it is applicable to mental health and substance abuse treatment and client rights as seen in chapter DHS 51, 55, 94, 92 and 75. 

Ability to follow oral and written instructions and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Have a strong interest in collaborating across the entire Human Services Department.
