Cook - Full Time

Job Responsibilities:
Perform a variety of routine duties connected with the preparation of meals at the Wood County Jail.

*Estimate quantities of food and supplies required for menus and perform skilled cooking tasks in preparing daily meals for prisoners, as well as preparing special diets when needed.
*Prepare bag lunches for Huber and Work Release prisoners.
*Bake cookies, cakes, pies, rolls, muffins and other bakery items.
*Lift and carry equipment and supplies to work and storage areas.
*Continually maintain proper storage of raw and prepared foods according to recommended food practices and rules.
*Inspect the dish washing area daily, to ensure that correct procedures are followed and the dish washing equipment is in good working condition.
*Wash and dry kitchen utensils and all other tools and equipment and return to proper location.
*Responsible for washing dishes in unusual or non-routine situations
*Responsible to know and practice the safety policies of the County.  Keep kitchen area clean and in a safe condition.  Report immediately any unsafe condition that may exist in the kitchen.  Make recommendations of effectively solving the unsafe condition.
*Rotate stock when new supplies arrive, and assist in inventory of food supplies.  Make purchases as directed.
*Work cooperatively with other department personnel.
*Perform related duties as required.
Job Qualifications:
*A high school diploma or an equivalent amount of training and experience is required.  
*Basic everyday living skills are needed, as is the ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.  
*Reading, writing, adding, and subtracting is needed for preparing recipes, maintaining food inventory.  
*Must have knowledge of the Department of Health and Social Services Institution Sanitation codes and the Department of Corrections codes. *Knowledge of large scale cooking methods, special diets, and food handling procedures.  
*Skill in planning and cooking satisfying meals, using kitchen equipment, and using cleaning equipment and cleaners is needed.  
*A pre-employment physical examination is required, and employee must be free from contagious diseases.  
*Computer skills helpful, but not required.  
*Knowledge in the use of a fire extinguisher.

Equipment used to perform the essential duties of the job:  food preparation equipment (cooking utensils, ovens, food warmers, mixing equipment, meat slicer, kitchen utensils, measuring devices), telephone, calculator, and copy machine.
